Dissertation: Differential Object Marking with AcI constructions and perception verbs in Spanish
First supervisor: Prof. Dr. Marco García García
Second supervisor: Prof. Dr. Klaus von Heusinger
Overview: I investigated the behavior of DOM with perception verbs in European Spanish, focusing on both perception modalities and construction types. Therefore, I compared the occurrence of DOM in AcI and mono-predicative constructions with both visual and auditory verbs. Taking both a diachronic and a synchronic perspective, I argued that the higher in proto-agent features the direct object (or the logical subject of the infinitive) is, the higher the occurrences of DOM. I observed that DOM occurs much more often and developed sooner with auditory verbs than with visual ones. Moreover, AcI constructions favor the incidence of the phenomenon. In short, I demonstrated that the impact of agentivity can be observed both in the diachronic evolution of DOM with human NPs, as well as its expansion to inanimate entities in present-day Spanish, by taking an experimental approach.

Master Thesis: Control with Communication Verbs: an empirical study comparing Brazilian Portuguese with English.
Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Jutta Hartmann
Overview: I explored (non-)obligatory control with communication verbs in English and Brazilian Portuguese (BP). I observed that even though these languages have very similar, they differ in the possibility of realizing an overt nominative subject, as well as the inflection of the infinitive. Both languages exhibit the same referential dependencies when the addressee is overt. In these cases, a non-overt subject needs to be co-referent with the addressee. Based on two experimental questionnaire studies and one preliminary study, I show that the inflected infinitive in BP is systematically accepted, and that we do find control with covert subjects in infinitival clauses in BP.

Undergraduate Thesis Project: The female characters in the novel “O quinze” by Rachel de Queiroz.
Overview: I conducted a literary analysis focusing on the female characters in Rachel de Queiroz’s first novel and compared them with the Brazilian historical context. I found that the characteristics and descriptions of the characters in the novel closely resemble the women of Brazilian society from that same period.
